How to Wash Washable Doormats – A Step-by-Step Guide

Doormats are essential in keeping your home clean, especially in the UK where the weather can bring all sorts of dirt and mud into your home. If you’ve invested in a washable doormat, you’ve already made a smart choice. But, like anything that gets regular use, your doormat needs a good clean now and then. In this guide, we’ll show you how to wash your doormat the right way, so it stays looking fresh and does its job for longer.

    1. Check the Care Instructions First

Before you throw your doormat in the wash, take a quick look at the care instructions. Most washable doormats will have instructions that give you details on temperature settings and washing methods. It’s always a good idea to follow these instructions to make sure your mat stays in tip-top condition for as long as possible.

    2. Shake Off Any Loose Dirt

Don’t put your doormat straight into the washing machine – take it outside and give it a good shake to remove any loose dirt or debris. If you’ve got a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment, you can also vacuum up any dirt that’s stuck in the fibres. Doing this will make sure your washing machine doesn’t get clogged with excess dirt.

    3. Set the Right Washing Machine Cycle

When it’s time to wash, pop your doormat into the washing machine. For most washable doormats, a gentle cycle with cold water works best. Cold water is kind to the fabric, while still giving it a deep clean. If the mat’s really dirty, you can opt for a warmer setting, but avoid hot water as it could damage the material.

    4. Use a Gentle Detergent

Go for a mild, eco-friendly laundry detergent. Harsh chemicals or bleach can damage the fibres of your doormat, so it’s best to keep things gentle. If your mat has any stubborn stains, you could use a stain remover that’s safe for washable fabrics. Also, steer clear of fabric softeners as they can leave a residue that affects the mat’s absorbency.

    5. Drying Your Doormat

Once your doormat is clean, it’s time to dry it. Don’t put it in the tumble dryer – this can damage the material and cause it to lose its shape. Instead, lay your doormat flat on a clean surface or hang it up to air dry. If it’s a warm, dry day, hanging it outside is a great option, but make sure it’s completely dry before putting it back at the door.

    Regular Maintenance Tips

To keep your washable doormat in good shape, it’s important to clean it regularly. Depending on the level of foot traffic, aim to wash your doormat every 1-3 months. Regularly shaking off dirt and debris also helps extend the time between washes.
